I'm really bad about anticipation!
While we wait, we'd like to share some information about Kickstarter for those of you who may not know about it yet.
Kickstarter is a way for independent creative people to receive funding for projects through crowd-sourcing, which means that many people donate smaller amounts as opposed to one large scale grant.
Kickstarter is also all-or-nothing funding - this means that a Kickstarter project has a set monetary goal. If it achieves this goal, the project is funded by the friends, family, and fans that backed the project. If it doesn't achieve the goal, the project isn't funded, but the friends, family, and fans also don't lose money on the project - in fact, funding is never taken until a project is backed.
But what do you get in return? Besides the joy of helping someone's hard work and dreams pay off in the completion of a project, Kickstarter gives rewards for backing a project to donators. This can be hand-made items, admission to the event, original customized art, special events, and many more! Not only that, but many of the items will only ever be offered just for the Kickstarter, as a thank you to those who really make a project happen!
If that still seems a bit fuzzy, here's the Kickstarter FAQ for more information.
Because this is the first year for this convention, we don't have the start up funding that is normally created by the previous year's convention. We want to make sure we can offer our convention goers an amazing experience, bring in guests from across the country to share their art, feed people, and generate a following that will help us grow and spread the word so that we can not only provide a great show for this year, but for future years to come!
We also wanted to make sure people could be a part of this project even if they can't attend this year. That's why we have both pre-registration reward levels and really nifty items at lower levels, some of them exclusive to the Kickstarter and/or convention, many of them hand made by professional artisans, crafters, embroiderers, costumers, and authors - that's us!
We will have multiple levels of pre-registration - they start with the base $75 registration, then there are additional levels to add on to the convention experience, such as a photoshoot, the official embroidered STLBJDCON t-shirt, our official convention doll, opportunities to attend exclusive panels, seating with our guests of honor at the convention's banquet, and more!
As soon as the Kickstarter is live, we'll post about it here, on facebook, our yahoo group, on Den of Angels, DairyLand BJD, and anywhere else we can think of (check out our Links page to find the other place we hang out). Please share with family, friends, even strangers - we've met some of our members just by talking to someone at work or at an event! Kickstarters work best by passing along the information, because you never know who may hear about it if word goes around!
